Coronavirus/COVID-19: Prevention/Mitigation

Resources and information about the novel coronavirus, Covid-19

Definitions

In order to understand what you read in the news, it's helpful to know what different terms mean. To start with, what does it mean to "prevent" the coronavirus from spreading, and what is "mitigation"?

  • Prevention: To try to stop an event from happening.  In this case, to stop COVID-19 from spreading into a community.
  • Mitigation: To limit the damage done by an event. In this case, to reduce the number of deaths in a community.

The link below contains a useful glossary of terms to help you understand the difference between terms such as quarantine and self-isolation, community spread and communicable, and morbidity and mortality.

Question:  What's the point in taking preventative measures before we have cases in our community?  Why does it matter?
Answer: Because without protective measures in place to slow the spread of COVID-19, the number of total cases in a community over time will be the same but the spread of the disease will be much faster - and the number of cases needing medical care may overwhelm the capacity of the healthcare system, which stays the same.

Without preventative measures, the number of total cases over time will be the same, but many more will need hospital care in a short time - overwhelming the capacity of the healthcare system, which remains constant in both cases.
