There are a number of different formats that are used to write papers and cite sources. It's important to find out which style your instructor will require you to use.
MLA (Modern Language Association) style is primarily used in the humanities, arts, languages, and literature. If you've taken an English class, this is the format that you were probably required to use.
Most social and behavioral sciences will use the APA (American Psychological Association) citation style and format. Sociology, however, has its own style, ASA (American Sociological Association).
Citation and format styles reflect the priorities for the discipline in publishing research and providing credit to authors, scholars, researchers, and funding agencies. The CR Library supports APA and MLA style by providing resources and advice, but you can always consult a reference librarian for help in identifying the details of other styles.
