Unlike lynchings intended to punish a purported criminal for specific actions, "terror lynchings" were intended to enforce segregation and racism by striking fear into communities. The Equal Justice Initiative has documented over 4,000 lynchings of Black individuals between 1877 and 1950. Their interactive website includes audio stories from families of victims, maps of the Black migration from the South throughout the U.S. during this period, a downloadable report, and more.
You can explore their site at Lynching in America.
Additional resources and books dealing with specific instances of racial violence against communities are listed on the tab Race Riots, Massacres, and Trials.
