Introduction to Library Materials

Library Materials

Many useful resources are available in the College of the Redwoods Library, including books, reference books, eBooks, and videos. Additional resources may be available at the Del Norte or Humboldt County Libraries and Cal Poly Humboldt Library. Visit those libraries' websites to search their catalogs. Use OneSearch to find books and other resources about your topic in the CR library and selected, college-level resources on the web.

Call Numbers

College of the Redwoods Library Call Numbers

Books in College of the Redwoods library are filed by the Library of Congress system that uses letter-number combinations assigned by subject, so that most books about the same subject will be filed together on the shelf. HSU Library uses this same system, and so do most colleges and universities in the United States. Browse the titles on the shelf in the sections listed below for architectural drafting research topics.

  • NA          Architecture
  • TH          Building construction
  • KF 5701 Building codes

Humboldt County Library Call Numbers

Most County, or public libraries in the United States will use the Dewey Decimal system, which uses numbers, and each number section represents a subject, so that books about the same subject are filed together on the shelf. Below are listed some number sections that are relevant to topics in (name of) program. Remember to also check the Juvenile or children's collection, the YA or Young Adult collection, and the Reference collection.

  • 604 Drafting
  • 690 Building Construction
  • 720 Architecture

College of the Redwood Reference Books

Reference books include encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals, guides, dictionaries, and compilations of resources such as primary documents. Reference books will provide a good overview of your topic, doing so in a short and well organized way, and they are good for getting started with any research assignment. Printed reference materials must be used in the library, but usually you will only need to consult these sources briefly.

College of the Redwoods Library Books

These items may be checked out from the College of the Redwoods library. They will be found on the library shelves by their call numbers.

College of the Redwoods DVDs

DVDs are located on the shelves beside the Reference Desk. They can be checked out, or they can be viewed on the computers and laptops available in the library. Check out headphones at the circulation desk.

College of the Redwoods ebooks

To read an Ebook, click on the link. You may be prompted to log in with your student ID number. Some Ebooks can be downloaded, look for the instructions. Other Ebooks can only be read online, and they will "time out" after fifteen minutes if nothing is clicked.

From Other Libraries

The CR Library isn't your only option for locating books.  Both Humboldt and Del Norte Counties have public libraries that are open to any resident in their county. You will need to show proper identification to get a FREE library card; no I.D. is necessary to use materials in the library.  In addition, CR students can borrow books from Humboldt State University's library. (You will need to show a CR Student ID card, which you can obtain from Student Services.)
