Useful and Relevant Search Words

Before diving into a search, consider what words best describe your interest or topic. Consult your textbook, class notes, or assignment guidelines for topic ideas. Correct spelling is important for best search results.

Also try:

Combine ethnic group words with topic words, such as students, advertising, business, demographics, economics, health, history, humor, law, medicine, military, music, poetry, politics, religion, soldiers, sports, statistics, theater, traditions, women, etc. Separate with the word AND, for example: Hawaiian Americans AND poetry; Pacific Islanders and advertising; Samoans and traditions.

Books in College of the Redwoods library are filed by the Library of Congress system that uses letter-number combinations assigned by subject, so that most books about the same subject will be filed together on the shelf. HSU Library uses this same system, and so do most colleges and universities in the United States. Browse the titles on the shelf in the sections listed below for relevant research topics.

E 50 - 100 covers the history of the North American continent, from prehistory to current

E 184  covers the history of immigrant groups to the United States, in sections for each ethnic group, including Asian, Hispanic, Latino, Mexican, Pacific Islander, and Puerto Rican Americans. However, books that focus on various ethnic groups’ contributions in a specific subject area, such as music, science, medicine, sports, or literature, will be filed with that subject.

Humboldt County Library Call Numbers
